Hot Take: You should embrace the rain at your engagement shoot
When Alayna and Paddy had scheduled their trip to Kansas City months in advance, we knew we had to make it work when we woke up to one of the rainiest days of the summer in Kansas City. I sent them a text asking if they would still be down to go get some photos and they were more than willing to go for it! Shooting these rainy Kansas City engagement photos at Loose Park & The Collannade was a dream of a Tuesday evening. Check out my favorite shots below- Hopefully they encourage you to just roll with it too if your session is looking like it might be a little drizzly out!
Elegant Engagement Photos at The Collonnade
We first started at the Collannade, which is on the northeast side of downtown Kansas City and is honestly in kind of a sketchier part of town but it is totally great for a quick shoot. (We were totally safe, it just is a little surprising to drive up on this structure in the middle of a more run down part of town).
It was a great indoor/outdoor option for rainy afternoon. We still got the green in the background without getting soaked and got some gorgeous architecture too. The start of our shoot was predicted to be heavier rains so we decided to start here and then feel it out if they wanted to go dance in the rain at Loose Park.
I felt like this overcast lighting and the architecture added to the romance and coziness of the love I felt between Paddy and Alayna. I am obsessed with capturing how a couple’s love feels in addition to how they look. As a Documentary Style Wedding Photographer that is a huge goal of mine.
I always try to have a little bit of a mix in my engagement shoots. One classy, and one more casual. The Collande in Kansas City was our classy spot (and where we stayed dry from the rain).
Our adventure at The Collonnade provided an added elegance to our session that went really well with their classier outfits. It was really the perfect backdrop to showcase their classic romance!
Cinematic Loose Park Engagement Photos
Once we warmed up and got some photos at the Collannade they decided to go for it and take some more at Loose Park. I was stoked because I have never had a couple say yes when I suggested to dancing in the rain instead of searching high and low for a last second free indoor location.
As we explored Loose Park, instead of letting the weather dampen their spirits, and Alayna & Paddy embraced the rain, our evening turned into something cinematic and dreamy. As a Catholic Wedding Photographer and Catholic Engagement Photographer I love capturing little moments that showcase how these couples’ love makes them live fully alive. Alayna kicked her shoes off and they frolicked their hearts out.
The rain & overcast skies created the perfect natural backdrop for these Kansas City engagement photos that feel intimate, cozy, and full of romance. Adding a filmy edit to the images just gave them a touch more dreaminess and romance. Some of my favorite shots are when they agreed to lie down in the grass and snuggle up.
